The portrayed characters represent allegorical masks constructed from fragments of family photos, a source of own past and memories, synthesized with fragments of works by great masters, such as Velázquez, Rembrandt, or El Greco. Not unlike chess figures or busts of history's greats, they remain affixed on their pedestals and placed into purposefully arranged spaces, dancing between reality and fantasy. Through this phantasmagoric amalgam of personal and general, spontaneous and official, Lalić deliberates to create a quasi-reality within which, through clash of possible and impossible, memory and construction, he expresses his perspective of human nature and its pursuit of self-discovery.
